There is now a primary school in every village across the subcontinent. However, many children drop out of school to provide supplementary income for their families. There are 50 million students at secondary level, and some 10 million graduates from nearly 200 universities. Women make up 9% of those enrolled in higher education, a high percentage for a low-income economy. India has one of the largest pools of science graduates anywhere in the world. However, the 48% illiteracy rate among adults is a significant brake on development.
